Report: Twitter Testing Mute for Annoying Tweeters

Twitter mute

Everyone has that one Twitter friend who, for social or work reasons, you just can’t bring yourself to unfollow, no matter how annoying they are on the micro-blogging site.

But soon you may not have to bow to those pressures: Twitter appears to be testing a “mute” function.

Some iOS and Android users have reported seeing the ability to mute another user, which, as The Verge explained, allows you to block another user’s tweets and retweets from your timeline, while still appearing as a follower.

Mute has been well received on third-party Twitter applications like TweetDeck and Tweetbot, the latter of which allows the muting of other users or entire apps—for a day, a week, or forever.

Is a colleague’s live-tweeting of an event distracting you from your work? Maybe a friend’s messages will surely spoil the most recent Mad Men episode before you watch it.

This new Twitter feature, if rolled out universally, would allow you to simply mute those folks to avoid annoyances. Just remember to manually unmute them after, or you could miss important communication, or links to animals that look like actors.

Mute does not, however, block direct messages or notifications via tagging, The Next Web pointed out.
